Causes of Women Experiencing Stomach Pain after Having Sex

One of the complaints that people may rarely experience after having sex is an aching stomach. And maybe you're wondering what's going on and how to stop it.

Mary Jane Minkin, MD, an ob-gyn at Yale New Heaven Hospital says that what you think of as 'abdominal pain' is actually 'lower pelvic pain'. Quoted from Women's Health, the following are some of the causes of women feeling abdominal pain after sexual intercourse:

1. Position during sex

According to Minkin, one of the causes of abdominal pain after sex is due to the wrong position during sex, or it could be due to deep penetration. To overcome this, you can buy over-the-counter painkillers.

"Taking painkillers an hour or two before sex can be very helpful for some women," says Minkin.

2. You have endometriosis

Endometriosis occurs when the lining of the uterus (womb) grows outside the uterus. Pelvic pain during and after sex is one of the most common symptoms of this condition.

"Deep penetration during sex can cause intense pain because all the organs stick together," says Ja Hyun Shin, MD, director of the pelvic pain clinic in the department of Women's Health and Obstetrics & Gynecology at Montefiore Health System.

3. You have ovarian or pelvic cysts

Some women may have ovarian cysts. Most are harmless and go away without treatment after a few months, but some can continue to grow and cause pain. But pelvic cysts are a little different. According to Shin, pelvic cysts can develop from adhesions that occurred as a result of previous surgery or infection.

4. You have a previous infection or inflammation

Vaginal infections from bacteria normally found in the vagina or from sexually transmitted diseases, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, can spread from the vagina to the uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries (pelvic inflammatory disease).

"The pain is fairly constant but sex can make it worse because you're irritating the already infected area," Shin says. But according to Minkin, it can also occur due to pelvic inflammation if it leaves scars on the pelvic scar tissue.

5. Dry vagina

Minkin says certain birth control pills can cause vaginal dryness, and notes that taking higher doses of estrogen can help with it. In addition, when you have entered menopause it can also cause vaginal dryness so that it can cause pelvic pain after sex.
