3 Stages of Perfectly Ripening Avocados

Avocado is one of the most complete natural foods thanks to good fats, essential fatty acids, and phytochemicals plus vitamins. Avocados also serve as a nutritional powerhouse.

Ripe avocado naturally

The easiest way to ripen an avocado is: 

1. Place it on the counter for a few days to let it ripen naturally. Greener avocados can last three to five days before they are ripe, while darker-skinned avocados ripen faster
2. To quickly ripen avocados on the table, place a bowl or paper bag with apples or bananas. Bananas, kiwis, apples, and avocados all produce ethene gas which, when placed next to a firm fruit, softens it. This natural gas breaks down the internal cell walls and converts starch into sugar, ripening the fruit naturally
3. To ripen avocados in a day or two, place them in a paper bag with a banana or two. This method concentrates the gas around the fruit but still allows the fruit to breathe. Avoid using plastic bags which will stiffen the fruit. Store in the refrigerator after the avocado is ripe
4. If you can't eat the avocado after it's ripe, store it in the refrigerator to slow down the ripening process. Uncut avocados can last one to three days in the fridge

Ripening avocado in the oven 

Hot temperatures do soften the avocado. How: 

1. Cut the avocado in half and remove the seeds and then wrap each half in plastic wrap
2. Microwave on this high heat, for two minutes then run the wrapped avocado under cold water to stop cooking
3. Wrap the avocado in foil and put it in the oven on high for 10-30 minutes, depending on how hard the avocado is

How to store sliced ​​avocado 

Store halved avocados in the refrigerator for a maximum of one to two days. Face the two halves together and then wrap them tightly in plastic wrap like a cheesemonger wraps cheese. 

This prevents air from seeping in to oxidize the fruit and hopefully doesn't change color. If so, cut off the browned part and hope the underside is green.
