Ruby for Symbian

I had just found in web, that now you can use Ruby to program to your Symbian Smart Phone
You can find documentation about the language here, and some library docs here.

Now you can use this powerful scripting language to turbine your N80 too :D
You can find an example and the files for download here

I loved the idea, because I do not want to learn Python, but it would be great to learn Ruby, after I learn it, I can program to my cell phone and can use Ruby On Rails for web programming :D

If you want to learn Ruby too, you can start with this books:

Do you know you can access your S60 phone using a web browser?

Do you know you can access your S60 phone using a web browser?
Yes, it is true …
This is possible using a modified version of the Apache Web Server
The port was created by the Nokia team, and you can get it in the Nokia Open Source portal
And there is a free service too, that you can use to enable the access to your phone from anywhere in the Internet, to enable it you just need to ask for a password by e-mail …
After you have your Racoon running (this is the name of the apache for S60), you can install Python for S60 and use mod_python to create dynamic content and make your phone content available to all internet users …
Think about a blog in your cell phone, with all your latest photos available …
or your contacts and schedule available to you from any web browser directly from your phone …
This means no more need for synchronization for your desktop apps, you can edit it using your browser …

Ok, I know that it is too geeky and that data plans are too expensive for this kind of thing …
but you can enable it only when you have an Wi-Fi connection available too …
Or use only your local Wi-Fi network for it if you do not want it available to all the world …

Think about the possibilities :D

I have already asked my user and password, and have already tried it in my local Wi-Fi :D

There are no contacts or schedule “gateways” written yet, but I loved the idea :D
for now I still using Mobical for it, and the SyncML from my phone since I do not have an Outlook license … (I Sync my contacts from Thunderbird to Mobical too :D )

Lots of freewares, and a way to read Open Office documents in your Symbian (at least if you are geek enought)

In the nokia Open Source portal, there is a port of the Python scripting language for S60 devices (this means that you can run it on your N80 too )
you can get it here: http://wiki.opensource.nokia.com/projects/Python_for_S60
but the best thing, is that you do not need to know how to program in python to use it, there are lots of freeware applications already written for you enjoy …
the full list is here: http://wiki.opensource.nokia.com/projects/PyS60_applications
Here is a small list:

  • nA Cell Tax Tracker This small application get your current cell phone costs from supported telecommunication providers over a short message. It allows you to analyse your costs and get statistics. Written in python for S60.
  • PyS60Remote This set of programs enables you to use a Series 60 mobile phone to control your win32 PC. The two devices connect via Bluetooth. Mainly suitable as a wireless presenter or remote for your video player.
  • EasyEdit 1.44 for 3rd Ed
  • Fupper is a Flickr upload tool for PyS60. It also includes a full FlickrAPI implementation that is based on Beej’s Python FlickrAPI.
  • OpenOffice (odt) reader .. a basic ODT reader using pyexpat port of pys60. Supports basic formating: bold, underline, etc. and text colors
  • Tetris Lost code for Tetris has been reposted in the Forum at last :)
  • EasyEdit : a full-featured, simple, intuitive text editor by chetbox.
  • PyS60 Python editor 1.03 new editor for editing your scripts on your phone. application and source code v1.03
  • pyED : Python Editor for Series 60 is an sourceforge project for creating an open source Python source code editor, written in Python by CyKe64, for Series 60. Once you have Python for Series 60 installed on your phone, pyed enables you to edit your scripts directly from your phone. Very cool!
  • client ShoutCAST for pys60 Source code is under Creative commons licence. Now you can listen radio on internet (MP3) and also Real Audio if you have real audio playerHelix !
  • RemoteCamera A script to take photos and FTP them to a server of your choice.

There are many more apps out there, and if you are a programmer like myself you can create your own apps …
So, enjoy the freewares, and write some more if you can :D

Let your cell phone teach you another language (and for Free) - Cool Factor of having a Symbian Phone

If you are like myself, and carry your phone everywhere …
And you have a symbian phone, able to play music to you …
You can now use your phone to learn another language …

for this to work, you will need iTunes in your computer, and you will need to subscribe to some podcasts (unfortunately they are inside iTMS so you can not subscribe to them directly from your cell phone)

and after it, you will need to synchronize your Cell phone with your iTunes in your PC …

when All this is set-up, you just need to subscribe to some Podcasts …

Windows Live Messenger for S60v3

I just found in the Darla Mack weblog a very good Windows Live Messenger Client for my N80,
it has almost the same “Look And Feel” that the desktop client has.
take a look at this screenshots …

It does not have many customization options, nor it has all the features of AgileMessenger, but it is free, works very well and looks great :D

I do not know who is the original developer, but thanks for them, for the great app.
PS.: thanks to Darla too for hosting the app.

Yahoo! Go 2.0 beta just launched.

Yahoo just launched Yahoo! Go 2.0, it is in beta yet, but different from the first version, now they support lots of cellphones and you does not need to have an account in one of the supported operators you can download the application directly from yahoo (Great News for N80 owners like myself, no more distinction from us the the N80ie owners).

I was planing to post a full review for the application today, but when I was going to download it using my N80 browser, Yahoo! just showed a page telling me that tie beta was full, but they have an option for you to let your mobile phone number and they will tell you when you can go back there and download your copy of Yahoo! Go.

so lets wait a little and see how long will it take …

Backup all your contacts + schedule + tasks for free

In the last post I wrote about a way to synchronize your Google Calendar with your mobile phone, but some times it is not enough!
there is another free online service that you can use to edit your contacts/calendar/tasks online and sync it with your mobile phone using SyncML too.
its name is:

with mobical you have a online PIM that you can sync with your mobile phone.
I used to use plaxo for it, but plaxo just sync with outlook and I`m changing my desktop to Linux so I`ll not have outlook anymore, this two posts are a research for an option :D

Pros:
Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Notes and Bookmarks online
Free service
Sends an SMS message with all the configuration for supported phones (N80 included)

Cons:
Sometimes it duplicates a contact entry, but it just happens in the first sync, after that all goes OK.
I could not sync notes and bookmarks with my N80
(it seems that the SyncML from N80 does not supports this databases)

I like a lot this service, and I`m testing the synchronization with Evolution on linux too, if it goes well mobical will be my choice for online PIM (if GooSync could sync my contacts with gmail it would beat mobical at least for me :D )

Google Calendar + Symbian = Perfect Match

I just found this weekend a very cool online service that allows you to synchronize your mobile schedule with your Google Calendar Account.

It works using SyncML, so it is not only for Symbian, but it works perfectly in my N80.
you can create Calendar items in your cell phone or in the web interface and sync them all with no problem …

Pros:
perfectly synchronization between your calendar and your google calendar.
free service
£9.95 subscription for more features than the free version
The next versions should support multiple calendars
Google Domain support

Cons:
Support only calendar (no tasks or contacts)

I think the service is great, is you like the idea, click on the above link and give it a try.

Some great apps that make my N80 wort its price :D

Well, in this post
I’ll talk about some little apps (Some are built-in) that makes my N80 more useful for me, there are many others that I can talk about other day, but I think these are the ones I use most of the time …

When I got my N80 I was trying to read some of my e-books using its built-in word and pdf readers, but the fonts, and text distribution on the screen ware not very good, and ware
not helping me to read anything …

This week I just found this site with the great Mobi Reader for download …
There is a bundled desktop application that helps you to convert and synchronize all your e-books, and even has the option for you to buy new e-books …

The process is very simple, you download the application to your desktop, connects your device
(there are versions for other platforms too), selects what e-books you want in your device (you can convert word and PDF documents), and after you sync it you can see the bellow screens in your N80 …

The Mobi Reader list of e-books available.
screenshot0002.jpg
After you select your e-book, you can see the text, navigate, select text, create bookmarks …
screenshot0003.jpg
This is the second option, if you do not like the full screen view …
screenshot0004.jpg
One of the greatest features for me, is that after you close the application, and reopen it, the e-book you ware reading is exactly in the same page, what makes it a lot easier to read :D

Other great app, but very simpler than the first, is the S60SpotOn, I found it just after my wife wondering why this great cell phone does not has the light option that her old 1100 had

This app just solved the problem …

You can start the app

screenshot0005.jpg

And then use your flash light to make your way in the dark :D

screenshot0006.jpg

The next app is one of the greatest I have found, but is just helps me to know what is running right now in my phone when I got that scary message telling me that I have no more
memory available …

This life saver app is Handy Taskman

screenshot0007.jpg

The next one is just a cool app that every N80 owner gets with the phone, it`s name is Lifeblog

When I first opened it, I was thinking that I would be able to use it to write posts in one of my blogs (this one, this about java in Portuguese, or this about java in English), but you can not do that, because Lifeblog uses another strange proprietary protocol, but Flickr is always a lifesaver, they joined nokia and now you can post photos directly from your Lifeblog to your Flickr account …

The process is very simple, just log into your Flickr account, and access the address: http://www.flickr.com/tools/mobile click on the Lifeblog link and get your URL and password (that is different from your flickr default password) …

screenshot0008.jpg

Open Lifeblog and select “publish to web”

screenshot0009.jpg

Accept to create a new blog account when prompted, enter your username, password and the URL provided …

screenshot0010.jpg

Select what access point you want to use, if it is a GPRS access point I suggest you to turn the
optimize images option on.

screenshot0011.jpg

Select the blog account just created.

screenshot0012.jpg

Write some title and description to your photo

screenshot0013.jpg

And hit Options/publish

screenshot0014.jpg

After that wait a little and your photos are already online …

Yes, I know, Shozu is a lot easier to use if you want your pictures on Flickr :D

After playing with it a little, I just found that I needed a easy way to control where my money go in the end of the month/year …

But I`m not exactly the “organized” kind of person, so I need an easy way to record what I spend and where I spend my money, and after I tested some apps for Symbian and Java ME, the only usable option I could find was Handy Expense
screenshot0015.jpg

is has a good UI for entering expenses

screenshot0016.jpg

Some report options

screenshot0017.jpg

And some useful reports …

screenshot0018.jpg

The only bad thing I found about this app, is the missing option to sync it with a desktop companion …

It has an option to export a report to an excel sheet, but you cannot import it in any desktop app
that I know, but I`m working in some excel macros to import it in my money control sheets :D

But it would be great if this app has some option to export the data in QIF or OFX formats …

And the last, but not least is the bundled music player, it is not a perfect multimedia application,
but I spend a lot of time listening to my MP3 collection while far from my computer, and my N80 is just perfect for it …

screenshot0019.jpg

The only thing I miss in this app, is the ability to transfer some playlists from my PC to my N80

screenshot0020.jpg

Well, this is my list of apps, that I use almost every day, now I leave some questions …

Is there any better multimedia app for N80 phones? I want one that I could synch with my PC,
transfer playlists, and if possible, use only one app to play music and video files :D
Second, is there any other financial APP for N80 that I can use and synch with a desktop app?
And last, but not least, can I use my N80 as a remote control for my TV, and Sound?

Thanks for every one that could read to here :D

And happy new year for you all …

PS.: I`ll never again use MS Word to write blog posts
